I saved a ton of money buying my coilovers used, still in great shape too, dropped it around 2" all around, really stiff ride too, another option is lowering springs, a friend of mine just purchased H&R's for his VW GTI, it dropped it close to 2" and made it stiffer.

Research some good springs, The JDM STI Pinks are a great choice, as are the new Epic Engineering springs. Expect to pay around $300 for either of those. You can go a bit cheaper with Tanabe or Tein, but some (not all) people complain about a very bouncy ride with those. And remember to regrease your struts when you do the install.

I put eibach pro kit lowering springs on mine little over 1" drop front and rear and handles wonderfully for a good price

I used to have a set of Tein S-Tech springs on my stock struts. The ride was fairly stiff, dropped it 2" in the front, 3/4" in the rear. Had to get rid of them because of the much wider tires I'm running wouldn't tuck into the wheel well. I picked them up for $75 lightly used.
